A few days ago we'd just gotten a new truck in so we were busy trying to get it unloaded while running customers through. This isn't unusual except that the phone, this day, kept ringing.
And ringing.
And ringing.
Each time my manager answers, it's a little old lady asking if we have any coffee makers. The answer is always the same, no, we're sold out and haven't been able to find out if they've come in yet. This happens four times and finally my manager hangs up on her the last time. Yes, she felt bad, but after four times it's understandable. Around the end of my shift, my replacement comes in and while I'm counting out change to a customer, the phone starts ringing. My manager says to my replacement; "Answer it, K, I just know it's her again."
He answers and the next thing I hear is; "Good afternoon, how can I help you? No, ma'am. No, we don't have any coffee pots."
We all had a fairly good laugh.
Fast forward to yesterday. I'm ringing up customers when a little old lady totters up with a cart full of stuff. I ring her up when my manager comes up to help with the growing line (same manager as before). I make small talk with the old lady and when I go to hand her the change she says; "Oh, by the way, there was something I was meaning to ask you. Do you have any coffee makers?"
I shot a look out of the corner of my eye at my manager and I actually watched her face turn red in an effort to keep from laughing. She tried to hide a grin by taking a gulp from a water bottle, but did a piss poor job of it.

Baww About It
A couple of days ago a family came through my line. As I'm ringing them up, their son (can't be more than nine or ten years old) starts wanting something...a toy of some sort, I think. They couldn't afford it (not many of the people coming through my line can) and told him they'd try and get it later. He wanted it now. This goes back and forth for a little while and I just keep scanning their items. By the time I get don, hit total, and tell them the price, the kid is sitting on the floor whining about how he never gets anything.
The father is rolling his eyes, mom pretends not to hear, and I'm just trying to remember being that age. Eventually I lean over the counter, look down at him, and say; "Complaining children make baby Jesus cry."
I look back up and the dad is trying to suppress a laugh.

Open for Business
It was suggested to my by YvilMonster that, after relating some of the horrors that happened to me at work, I should start a blog to catalog my rants and general day to day work. After a while, I figured why not? I could relate some of the stories I'd already posted elsewhere, but I figure a new blog deserves a new story. With that in mind, I'll tell about something that happened a couple weeks back and that I haven't posted anywhere else yet.
One of our regular customers is a jackass (and even looks like one, too. Hee-haw). No one likes him and one of my co-workers will actually walk off the register when he comes in. After his first trip through my line, I knew exactly why and ever since then, if he comes in, I'll call the manager on duty so they can take care of him. When he comes through my line (the few times he does) he's always complaining about having to wait or how slow I am. Now, granted, when I was starting out, I was slow. For an average scan time for me, 6.8 seconds wasn't unusual. Now, however, my average scan time is sitting at a comfy 3.5 seconds. That's pretty fast by our standards and it's a small matter of pride for me. However, jackass still complains and generally does his best to be a rude fuck to the point that by the time he leaves the store I'm red in the face and ready to bite the face off the next person in line.
A couple of weeks ago, he does something that earns him a new nickname.
He comes in, buys a flashlight of some sort, some meds and things and then mercifully goes away. Later on in the day, just before we're closing up, I see him walking up, bag and flashlight in hand. He comes in, drops the (very dirty) bag on my counter and says he got the wrong pills and needs to do an exchange. My manager had already closed out her register, so the exchange had to be done on mine. Do I mind? Hell no. I go and start arranging shelves, just wanting to get away from him. After a few minutes, the exchange is done, he leaves with his news bottles, and I come back up front to find my manager leaning against the counter in front of her register, arms crossed, and a scowl on her face.
She asks me if I noticed the bag, and I said; "Yeah, looked like it had mud on it."
"It was shit."
O_O!
It would seem that what I had taken for mud was, in fact, shit. And it was on my counter. For a good bit of time. Ew. I now refer to jackass customer as "Shit Bag." Everyone working there knows why.
She laughed when I came out with the cleaning supplies and made the counter shine with disinfectant. I just wanted to take a shower.
